About Reboot Monkey

Reboot Monkey provides data center and IT infrastructure services to clients across multiple locations. Our technicians support clients with onsite data center tasks including hardware installation, rack and stack, cabling, hardware replacement, troubleshooting, and other smart hands/remote hands services.

We’re looking for experienced Freelance Data Center Technicians in Sydney who are comfortable working independently and taking on onsite assignments based on client demand.

About the Role

This is an hourly, on-demand contract opportunity supporting data center operations in Sydney, Australia.

Technicians are dispatched to client sites for specific projects or tickets. Assignments and schedules vary depending on client requirements, so there is no guaranteed number of hours per week or fixed 8-hour workday. Some assignments may be a few hours, while others may be a full day or longer.

This opportunity is well suited for technicians who want flexible work around other professional commitments and are comfortable accepting onsite assignments as they become available.

Technicians will generally support data center assignments within or near the Sydney area.

Compensation & Work Setup

  • Hourly, project-based contract

  • Paid for actual hours worked on assigned tickets/projects

  • No guaranteed minimum number of hours

  • Assignments may range from short-duration tickets to full-day or longer projects

  • Rates may vary depending on the assignment and working hours

  • Additional transportation allowance may apply for assignments outside the immediate local area

  • Rate multipliers may apply for eligible evening, night, or weekend assignments

  • Flexible schedule — technicians may accept assignments around existing work or other commitments

  • Technicians are expected to work independently onsite with remote coordination when required

Key Responsibilities

Depending on experience and assigned tier, responsibilities may include:

  • Rack and stack, de-racking, equipment installation, and hardware deployment

  • Install, replace, and troubleshoot servers, switches, storage systems, and other data center hardware

  • Perform hardware break/fix, including component replacement and power cycling

  • Install, organize, label, and troubleshoot copper and fiber cabling

  • Install and replace SFPs, QSFPs, transceivers, and other specialized hardware

  • Perform fiber testing, termination, splicing, and other specialized cabling tasks where applicable

  • Support data center migrations, equipment moves, and decommissioning activities

  • Troubleshoot physical and connectivity issues and escalate when required

  • Follow client MOPs, SOPs, safety procedures, change processes, and site requirements

  • Complete tickets, documentation, photos, asset information, and service reports accurately

  • Coordinate with remote engineers, project managers, NOCs, vendors, and client teams

  • Work independently onsite while maintaining clear communication with the assigned project team

Technical Experience

Tier 1 – Physical Data Center Operations

  • Rack and stack

  • De-racking and decommissioning

  • Server and equipment installation

  • Hardware swaps and break/fix

  • Power cycling

  • Copper and basic fiber cabling

  • ESD and physical safety procedures

  • Ticketing and documentation

Tier 2 – Fiber, SFP & Specialized Hardware

Includes Tier 1 responsibilities, plus:

  • Fiber installation, testing, termination, or splicing

  • SFP/QSFP and optical transceiver installation and troubleshooting

  • Specialized cabling

  • Customer-specific hardware

  • More advanced physical/network infrastructure troubleshooting

Tier 3 – Advanced Networking & Troubleshooting

Includes Tier 1 and Tier 2 responsibilities, plus experience with:

  • Cisco or Juniper networking equipment

  • Routing and switching

  • VLANs and general networking principles

  • Complex network troubleshooting

  • Root cause analysis

  • Data center migrations

  • Automation and infrastructure tooling

  • Security and ACL-related tasks

  • Advanced server/network troubleshooting

Technicians do not need experience with both Cisco and Juniper. Hands-on experience with either platform is sufficient; experience with both is a plus.

Job requirements

Requirements

  • 3+ years of relevant data center, infrastructure, network, server, or field engineering experience preferred

  • Demonstrated hands-on experience appropriate to the tier being considered

  • Ability to work independently onsite with minimal supervision

  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to follow MOPs, SOPs, safety procedures, and client requirements

  • Comfortable working with remote teams, project managers, NOCs, and client stakeholders

  • Willingness to accept occasional night, weekend, or short-notice assignments

  • Access to basic tools and equipment required for onsite work

  • Valid driver's license where required for the assignment

Networking & Systems Experience

Depending on the assignment, experience with the following is valuable:

  • Cisco or Juniper

  • TCP/IP, VLANs, DNS, VPN, and general networking principles

  • Linux and/or Windows

  • VMware or Hyper-V

  • Server management and hardware troubleshooting

  • BMC/IPMI, iLO, iDRAC, KVM, or similar remote management technologies

Certifications such as CCNA/CCNP, JNCIA/JNCIS, CompTIA Linux+, or equivalent experience are a plus but are not required for all technician tiers.

Work Authorization

Candidates must already have the legal right to work in Australia for the applicable contract assignment.

Reboot Monkey does not provide visa or work-permit sponsorship for these contract assignments.

Candidates must have appropriate work authorization and should not require employer sponsorship now or in the future.

Schedule & Availability

  • Flexible, dispatch-based schedule

  • No guaranteed number of hours per week

  • Assignments may range from approximately 2–3 hours to a full day or longer, depending on client requirements

  • Occasional nights, weekends, or short-notice assignments may be required

  • Work is generally within the Sydney area, with nearby assignments possible depending on client demand

  • Technicians should be comfortable working independently onsite
